Case study
THE CHANNEL
Two kinds of video, two very different numbers
Rho is a business banking platform. Its channel has 34.1K subscribers and 114 videos, with a median of 14K views across the last 30 uploads.
The best video is not about banking. “If You Don’t Understand Funding, You Don’t Understand Startups” has 678K views, 48× the median. Behind it: “The Art of Boring Startups That Raise Millions” (196K, 14×) and “The One-Person Startup Era Has Officially Begun” (162K, 12×).
Now the product-led end of the library. “Best Business Bank Accounts for Startups 2026: Mercury vs Rho” has 5.3K views. “The 5 BEST Business Credit Cards in 2026” has 3K.
Those are not failures. They are a different job, and the numbers show it.
WHAT THE DATA SHOWS
Reading the two engines
The audience engine: stories about founders
The 100K+ videos are narrative takes on how startups get built and funded. They answer a curious founder’s “what’s changing?” and they are easy to share. None of them lead with a product. The top three are 12× to 48× the median.
The intent engine: comparisons and “best of” lists
Bank-account and credit-card comparisons get 3K to 5K views. That is a quarter to a third of the median, and they come from people who are about to pick a provider. A founder who searches “Mercury vs Rho” is much closer to opening an account than one watching a funding essay.
The middle: practical startup how-tos
“The 1-Page Business Plan Behind Million Dollar Startups” (31K, 5 days old) and “How to Set Up an LLC” (4.1K) sit between the two. They catch founders at the moment they need something done, and they are the natural bridge from story to product.
The mistake would be judging the comparison videos by the same yardstick as the essays. Views are the metric for one engine and booked accounts are the metric for the other.
WHAT WE DO WITH IT
What we do with it
Keep the audience engine fed. Two to three funding and founder-economy stories a month, written the way the 678K video is: one clear claim in the title, a point of view in the first 30 seconds.
Build the bridge. Every story gets a practical follow-up (“how to set up your cap table”, “how to open your first business account”) so a viewer has a next video that touches the product.
Give the intent engine its own scorecard. Comparison videos are measured on clicks to the sign-up page and accounts opened, not on views.
Refresh comparisons on a schedule. The titles carry the year, and the competitor list changes. Stale comparison videos lose trust fast.
Questions a SaaS founder would ask
Should our best content mention our product? Not in the title. Rho’s biggest wins do not. Put the product in the bridge video and the description.
Why do our comparison videos look weak next to our stories? They are written for fewer, more serious viewers. Judge them by conversions.
Can a story video still lead to pipeline? Yes, through the next-step video and a tracked link, but expect a longer path.
